18/09/09 - Covingham to Coleview Cycle Path

Cllr Glenn Smith

I have had a call from a resident who was interested to know why the foot bridge over the River Cole was to be removed. This is going to happen as part of the new footpath and cycle path that will link Covingham to Coleview in front of the new Wimpey development up to the Community Centre.

The bridge will be removed as it needs substantial maintenance and the costs are prohibative. Therefore it was desided that as there are already two bridges there it would be removed.

It was also asked why the new cycle way couldn't go to the new bridge so there was less roads to cross than the old one. The response I've had from officers is below:

"If the path was to turn right to link into the new access road into Oakley Park, the longitudinal gradient of this link path would be too steep, as a gradient steeper than the maximum permissible of 1 in 14 would be required for the bulk of its length."

This is te correct standard to be applied for disabled access etc."
