It has 59 Councillor positions which is currently made up of 43 Conservatives, 3 Liberal Democrates and 13 Labour Councillors. The current Conservative adminstration took control in the May 2003 local elections when we gained six new seats, of which Cllr Glenn Smith was one (although in 2003/2004 we had no overall control and therefore found it hard to proceed with Labour the Liberal Democrats blocking us at every move). In the Covingham and Nythe ward (which also covers the southern tip of Coleview) is currently made up of Cllr Glenn Smith, Cllr Dale Heenan and Cllr Phil Young. Up until June 2004, the Council control was split and difficult to manage as it was a hung Council with no one party with overall control. This all changed in the local elections when the Conservative group gained four new seats, of which Cllr Dale Heenan was one. In February 2005, the Conservative administration announced their success in proposing an average 3% increase in Council Tax for Swindon residents for the 2005/2006 year. We continue to pledge fair and affordable council tax. Since then in 2006 we have a 4.8% increase and then in 2007 3.4%. This has meant over the three years where the Conservative budget went forward we increased Council tax by less than 12% - compare this with Labour's last three budgets which totaled over 42%! |
